Miami University Streamlines Student Assessment Process with Chalk & Wire and Instructure Canvas Integration

Ridgeway, Ontario – (May 27, 2015) – Higher education assessment provider Chalk & Wire announced today that it has become a certified partner with Instructure, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company and creator of the Canvas learning management system (LMS), to integrate its assessment platform with Canvas for Miami University. The integration between Chalk & Wire and Canvas makes it easier for Miami University professors to assess gains in competency over time while in the same session grading student coursework in a single, unified system.

“Previously, we had to assess and grade student work in both Chalk & Wire and Canvas, and students had to upload their assignments in both systems,” said Cheryl Irish, director of accreditation and assessment, Miami University. “Now, as the systems work together seamlessly, we can avoid a lot of duplicate data entry and have a much more efficient assessment process.”

Chalk & Wire appears at the course level as normal assignments directly in the Canvas user interface. Miami University uses Chalk & Wire to define, document, assess and analyze student learning outcomes for individuals within its College of Arts and Science, College of Creative Arts, College of Education, Health and Society and for some of their General Education programs.

“Creating a more unified experience for client institutions like Miami University, our integration with Canvas allows faculty members to spend more time focusing on teaching and other high value tasks while producing high quality, valid data and analytics about student progress at a granular level,” said Geoff Irvine, CEO of Chalk & Wire. “Additionally, students can access and submit work quickly and receive effective and timely feedback about their skills. With those evaluations, leadership can engage faculty and other stakeholders in proactive and informed discussions about continuous improvement.”

Chalk & Wire is a certified partner with Canvas, meaning the Canvas team formally reviews and certifies the integration from Chalk & Wire. These certified partnership integrations empower educational organizations to offer its faculty, teachers, and learners a seamless ecosystem of educational technologies.

“We value the Chalk & Wire integration into Canvas because it simplifies administrative work around assessments for faculty and teachers,” said Melissa Loble, vice president of Partners and Programs at Instructure. “Canvas and Chalk & Wire are both committed to improving the educational outcomes for learners by simplifying the technology used in education.”
