Western Michigan University Uses Terra Dotta to Standardize Study Abroad Process and Expand Student Participation

Terra Dotta Solution Automates Full Higher Ed Study Abroad Program Lifecycle

Chapel Hill, N.C., January 29, 2019 – Helping even more higher education institutions drive expanded study abroad participation nationwide, Terra Dotta, the trusted leader in higher education travel, study abroad and international program management solutions, has announced that Western Michigan University has deployed its Study Abroad solution.

Sending more than 600 students abroad each year, Western Michigan University deployed Terra Dotta to automate multiple manual processes involved in managing its more than 40 faculty-led study abroad programs. This includes facilitating the student application and enrollment process; enabling study abroad staff to track faculty-led program proposals and updates on programs offered; unifying the departments involved in delivering each program (i.e., study abroad, marketing, finance, human resources, institutional leadership); proactively mitigating travel risk; and driving department-wide efficiencies.

“Terra Dotta has been instrumental in helping us standardize the full lifecycle of Western Michigan’s study abroad program. With an office-wide initiative in place, led by Study Abroad Specialist Sarah Reid, we’ve been able to meet the demands of increasing study abroad participation with less funding – including adding more study abroad program options than ever before and processing applications in a fraction of the time,” said Dr. Lee M. Penyak, Director of Study Abroad, Western Michigan University. “We look forward to expanding our use of Terra Dotta to drive major inter-departmental workflow and process efficiencies in 2019.”

As part of Western Michigan’s continued use of Terra Dotta, the study abroad office plans to automate and track its extensive processes and workflows to facilitate a more standardized, practical and efficient administrative process. It will also use the solution to foster streamlined communication with faculty regarding existing and new program information by prompting them with reminders to complete appropriate next steps.

“Western Michigan University’s study abroad team has done an incredible job of streamlining its study abroad application and enrollment process to ensure accuracy and compliance,” said Brandon Lee, CEO of Terra Dotta. “We look forward to seeing them realize additional benefits by taking study abroad workflow and process improvements to the next level.”
